That is the question. And here are the answers. Learn the etiquette for regifting a present you don’t want.

The post Regifting Etiquette: Here’s What You Need to Know appeared first on Giftster and was written by Giftster.

]]>
Regifting is the act of repurposing a gift you don’t want as a gift for someone else. It’s highly controversial but possible to do successfully. So, yes, you can give the sweater you got from your Aunt Patricia to one of your coworkers… if you follow this regifting etiquette.

Regifting mistakes to avoid

Only some gifts are suitable for regifting. Don’t repurpose these types of presents for someone else:

 • Personalized gifts: Items customized with a name, initials, or photograph shouldn’t be given to someone else. Look for personalization in less obvious places, too, like a note written inside a book or a small engraving on a piece of jewelry.
 • Handmade gifts: If the giver found out you’d regifted their handmade knit blanket or piece of art, they’re much more likely to be upset.
 • Gifts you just want to get rid of: Everyone deserves a thoughtful present. Don’t make a pile of all the gifts you don’t want, then randomly wrap them and give them to others.

Sometimes regifting is too risky. Don’t regift a present in these scenarios:

 • Within a friend circle: People talk. There’s a chance you’re creating an awkward situation if the original gift-giver knows the new gift-receiver.
 • When it would be noticeable that you aren’t using the gift: If Grandma gives your daughter an expensive dress but never sees her wearing it, she’s likely to ask questions. It’s better to use a gift like this once or twice.

Tips for successfully repurposing gifts

Think about the type of gifts that make you happiest to receive. The person who gives you the present has usually considered your likes and dislikes and chosen something you would enjoy. Here’s how to do the same with a “regift”:

 • Regift new, unused items: Make sure anything you regift still has the tag, original packaging, and any manuals or accessories that came with it.
 • Consider the gift carefully: Is it an item you don’t need or want, but you know it’s something the new recipient will love? Then regifting is a possibility!
 • Take care when wrapping the present: You can make a repurposed present look special with creative wrapping or a beautiful bow. And don’t forget to add a card with a nice message inside.

Alternatives to regifting

Regifting is controversial because people expect you to put some time and effort into finding them the perfect present. (And this doesn’t usually involve checking the shelves in your basement.)

Consider other ways of giving away presents you don’t want or need. You can donate them, offer them to someone as a “hand-me-down,” or use them in a white elephant gift exchange. Any of these options might feel more tactful.

You can also prevent unneeded and unwanted gifts. Create a wishlist using Giftster. Share it with your friends and relatives so they know exactly what you want. Encourage others to create wishlists, too, so you know they won’t be tempted to regift what you give them.

Happy regifting!

How to add items to your partner’s child account list with Suggested Items https://www.giftster.com/news/child-list-suggested-items/ Tue, 12 Dec 2023 22:35:34 +0000 https://cms.giftster.com/?p=13101 Ever wish you and your partner could both add gift ideas to your child's list? You can with Suggested Items.

The post How to add items to your partner’s child account list with Suggested Items appeared first on Giftster and was written by Giftster.

]]>
Ever wish you could add a gift idea to someone else’s list, including your partner’s child account lists? You can! We call them Suggested Items.

Suggested Items are just like regular items, except you can secretly add them to another group member’s list, and they won’t see what you added, but other group members can. How fun is that?

It’s a way for both parents to contribute ideas to a child’s wish list.

What are Suggested Items?

 • Suggested items appear separately at the end of each list
 • The list maker cannot see these items on their My Lists view
 • Each Suggested Item includes the name of who added it
 • The member adding it can edit or delete it and mark it reserved or purchased
 • Deleting a list will also delete the Suggested Items added by others to that list
 • Changing list privacy to private means nobody can see the Suggested Items for that list
A view of a list with Suggested Items on it.
A Shop For view of a wish list with Suggested Items.
The list maker’s view of a wish list with Suggested Items on it.

How do you add Suggested Items?

You must be in a Giftster group with someone to have the privilege of suggesting items on their list. Lists with shared or public privacy display Suggested Items and the member names who put them there.

 1. Add suggested items while viewing a group member’s lists on Shop For.
 2. You’ll see the button to add a Suggested Item at the bottom of a wish list when you’re logged in and you belong to the same group as the list maker.

Can I see a list of all of the Suggested Items I have added?

View all the Suggested Items added by you, from all lists, in one place, where you can edit or delete them as you like. Look for the Items I Suggested list under My Lists. It’s Giftsterrific!

What are some other uses for Suggested Items?

 • You know something your sister really wants but she didn’t put it on her list. Now you can.
 • You bought something that wasn’t on your brother’s list and you don’t want someone else to buy a duplicate. Add the item as a Suggested Item and mark it purchased by you. Now you are on record for buying it.
 • Your uncle has a list but never puts anything on it. Now you and your group can put your heads together and suggest items for him.

Happy suggesting!

]]>
The reimagined Giftster App for iOS was just released. We’re so excited to bring you new and improved wish list-making capabilities in this big update.

Let’s take a look at 3 new ways you can add items to your list.

1. Add items to your wish list from Safari

Imagine this…you’re browsing your favorite store online and find an item you’d like to add to your Giftster list. Before the new update, you’d have to copy and paste the link into the Giftster app. Now, all you need to do is tap the share icon and select the Giftster app from the share sheet. Choose your list and add it to Giftster without leaving Safari.

Watch how fast it works when adding an item from Amazon.com below.

Tip: See how to add Giftster to your share sheet

2. Add items from your favorite retailer’s app

Now, let’s say you do most of your shopping at Walmart or Target and use their app. You can add items to your Giftster wish list from many retailer’s apps too.

Find an item you’d like to add and look for the share icon. This will bring up your iPhone’s share sheet.

Tap the share icon on your favorite retailer's app to add it to Giftster.

Tap Giftster and you’re off to the races without ever leaving your favorite store’s app. If you’re not seeing Giftster in your list of apps follow these steps to add it.

3. Find & fetch items from the in-app browser

And finally, a third new way to add items to your Giftster lists. This method is right in the Giftster app. Search the web using Giftster’s in-app browser for anything you’d like to add in Find & Fetch mode. See how it works below.

Haven’t tried Giftster yet? Get the free iOS app today. Giftster is also available on Google Play or at giftster.com.

Here's a few top picks to inspire your wish list building.

At Giftster, we’re reminded constantly of the sheer joy and delight a great gift can bring someone. A thoughtful gift can make a big impact in someone’s day-to-day life. A needed item can make life easier and save a friend money. And best of all, giving a gift you know the recipient wants empowers you to give with confidence.

We asked Giftster members to share the best gifts they were given using Giftster. We received so many wonderful responses and truly enjoyed reading them. Below you’ll find a few of the hundreds of gifts members shared. We hope these ideas inspire you as you build your wish lists.

My favorite gift i have gotten using giftster was my dog Ollie! Both of my siblings and I as well as my Dad all put a Yorkie as our number one gift on our giftster page for 2 straight years, and our persistence ended up convincing our parents that we really wanted a dog. The Giftster app is such a great concept and works great! Here is a pic of Ollie 🙂

– Jasper V.
Ollie the Yorkie

The best gift I received using Giftster was the Drunk Elephant Moisturizer. When you read that, it might sound boring to you. But when someone gets you something that you use every day (and it’s not the cheapest either) really not only means a lot but just in it’s simplest form, helps you out.

– Shaelyn F.

I am not sure I can choose just 1 as the best! If I have to choose I would have to say them all because I choose them!

– Jennifer B.

A cooking class where I learned how to use herbs and spices properly. It changed how I cook AND when I told my relatives about it, they changed their cooking as well, no longer sticking to exactly the measurements in a recipe but adjusting to add more flavor. And even better, I was able to use my gift to create some wonderful meals for the people who gave me the gift so everyone benefitted. The best gift for the receiver is one that you remember, that fits your personality in the moment, and shows that the giver knows you and cares about you. The best gift for the giver is one that you can tell is appreciated in the moment and comes up again and again.

– Laura C.

The best tangible gift I received using Giftster is my spice rack. I love to cook and use it almost every day! The best non-tangible gift I have received is watching my family (and myself) opening gifts we really want and need. Giftster makes this so much easier. It is the perfect way for a family like mine to stay updated on everyone’s current likes! Thank you for this.

-RaeAnn S.

Travel backpack with packing cubes that I can use on all of my upcoming travel adventures!

– Lexa W.

I was able to get some pretty great vinyl records from family. They always have a tough time remembering what I am looking for and what I already have in my collection so using Giftster was a perfect way to help them know what I was wanting.

– KC K.

The best gift I received using Giftster was a moka pot. My passion for making and serving good coffee has grown and receiving the moka pot has allowed me to step up my coffee game. The amazing part is that my family who lives in a different country was able to buy this off my list because of Giftster!

– Katie M.

My I love you almost as much as tacos shirt! Because no one knew that I was a deadpool fan until then and they didn’t know that I loved tacos so much! I was able to express myself and I felt awesome because I felt accepted by that team member who got it for me!

– Alice F.

The aero garden herb grower because I am able to grow all my own fresh herbs from home for fresh healthy cooking for family and friends!

– Sabrina A.

A life size human skeleton to help me study in PT school! Also doubles as cool decor haha!

– Savannah S.

An entry way shoe rack. I had recently moved into a new home and for Christmas, I added an entry way shoe rack to help make my home feel more like “my” home. I had just recently gotten out of an abusive relationship and had to move all my belongings. This new home represented a fresh start for me. My mother had also recently gotten remarried and introduced my step-sister to the family. My step-sister happened to be my Secret Santa for Christmas, so getting this gift to call this place “my” home from my new sister was just everything I needed in that moment.

– Deborah S.

My favorite gift was a simple pillow. It was a much needed and highly desired gift that my family felt confident purchasing thanks to Giftster!

– Dayna F.

LL Bean shirts. Beautiful plaid colors, fine workmanship, comfortable, and durable. A staple in my everyday life.

– Gerald R.

Giftster has allowed me to share what gifts I’ve wanted with many family members. The best gift I did receive though was plane tickets to see my family member in California.

– Kaylani T.

A Squatty Potty. It is a life changing experience to have a Squatty Potty in your bathroom.

– Reilly Williams

A wall hanger for my fiesta ware cups and saucers – it gave my son the ability to feel confident in his gift that he gave to me.

– Mary M.

The best gift my daughter has ever received is her ball pit! Seeing how happy she is to climb in and play just melts my heart. She just turned one and can tell the difference between the different colored balls. It’s a great gift for learning and fun!

– Samantha J.

An unexpected gift from my former team that I lead which were unpurchased items from my wishlist (silk scrunchies and a face mask).

– Chamari D.

I participate in a Random Act of Kindness group on Facebook and we share a Giftster list so that we can surprise strangers with gifts. Last month I received an unexpected package of indie nail polishes made by a seller on Etsy. They are so fun and sparkly and it makes my day whenever I wear them!

– Kate J.

The humidifier and the backpack that I received for Christmas were the two best gifts. My family was able to pick out the stuff that I exactly wanted and they found the links feature very helpful. I use the humidifier everyday and it helps me sleep better. The backpack is so well designed, it makes carrying my laptop for my business trips very convenient.

– Namita C.

I love crafting, but my brother refuses to buy giftcards for me to pick my stuff out. With Giftster he was able to know exactly what items I wanted from the craft store 🙂

– Courtney L.

A Nat King Cole vinyl album – it takes me back many years and makes me feel like a kid experiencing the magic of Christmas with my mom, dad, brother, and grandma.

– Jesse K.

Fleece lined crocs – for obvious reasons – best gift ever.

– Evelyn B.

A new book bag and lunch box. I’m a substitute teacher and needed something to keep all my stuff together and my lunch box was pretty embarrassing. I had a second grader tell me to “ just keep saving up and I would be able to buy one”. Very precious advice. My secret Santa bought it for me when he saw it posted. I love it!

– Shawn J.

A pony! I put “a pony” on my Christmas list as a joke and my husband got my a “My Little Pony” which technically fulfilled my gift wish😁 That is the kind of inside joke that makes me laugh, which is one way my husband really shows that he loves me.

– Laura P.

A sincere thank you to everyone who took the time to share their favorite gifts with us.

What’s a Good Gift for a Friend Going Through a Divorce? https://www.giftster.com/news/whats-a-good-gift-for-a-friend-going-through-a-divorce/ Fri, 17 Jun 2022 16:25:33 +0000 https://cms.giftster.com/?p=9612 Divorce is difficult, but gift-giving doesn’t have to be. Here’s a guide to help you find the best gifts for a friend going through a divorce.

The post What’s a Good Gift for a Friend Going Through a Divorce? appeared first on Giftster and was written by Giftster.

]]>
Very little about divorce is easy. If you or a friend is going through a separation, you may not even know how to help or what to ask for.

This guide from the gift experts at giftster.com makes everything a little simpler. Here are thoughtful gifts for a friend going through a divorce and tips for creating a divorce gift registry.

Gifts for Comfort and Self-Care

Divorce is difficult, and it’s possible friends going through a divorce will neglect to take good care of themselves.

Gifts that help your friend relax and take care of their basic needs can help them through this stressful time. A few ideas include pre-cooked meals or a gift subscription to a meal kit service, a gym pass, or a voucher for a spa service or massage.

You can also put together a self-care or stress-relief care package for a friend who is going through a divorce. It could include luxurious creams, comfort foods, a book or journal, and stress balls or fidget toys.

Gifts for Starting Over

During a marriage, a couple creates a life together. With divorce comes the need to define themselves as individuals again. A recently divorced friend may also need to create a new living space.

You can help your friend start over by gifting them household essentials, like new bedsheets or bath towels, small kitchen appliances like a toaster or coffee maker, or a houseplant.

Ultimately, one of the best gifts might be your time. Offer to help paint walls, hang curtains, box or unbox items during a move, or shop for home essentials with them. They’ll appreciate the assistance as they redefine themselves and their space.

Gifts for Laughing and Having Fun

Since divorce is typically unpleasant, even when it’s “amicable,” don’t forget to gift your friend some opportunities to have a good time.

Enjoy a day out participating in your friend’s favorite activities. Go wine tasting, visit a lake to go fishing, hit a round of golf, get mani-pedis together, go on a long walk or hike, try ax throwing, see a movie together in theaters, or enjoy a nice meal.

You might even consider throwing your friend a divorce party, with themes like “I Don’t” or “Jail Break.” (Just make sure it’s tactful and about your friend, not their ex.)

Creating a Divorce Gift Registry

If you’re going through a divorce, you’ll have plenty of friends and family who want to help you get back on your feet. Creating a divorce gift registry puts all of the essentials you need in one place so friends and family know exactly what will help the most.

With a free online registry like giftster.com, it’s easy to create a divorce registry. You can list items from any store or website, and users can mark them when they’re purchased. Plus, you can share it easily with anyone who asks. Giftster is a personal registry for every season of your life.

The Life Changing Magic of Tidying up your Wish Lists https://www.giftster.com/news/the-life-changing-magic-of-tidying-up-your-wish-lists/ Tue, 11 Jan 2022 19:58:43 +0000 https://cms.giftster.com/?p=8963 Is your wish list in need of some clean up? Take a look at some handy features Giftster has to offer including the I got this button to archive gifts you've received.

The post The Life Changing Magic of Tidying up your Wish Lists appeared first on Giftster and was written by Giftster.

There’s something special about the end of the year when many people are collectively pressing pause and taking time to recharge their batteries. It’s a time to rest and reflect. A time to be grateful for another 365 days of possibilities.

A new year signals a fresh start. And with every fresh start there is a little bit of clean up to be had. It’s also a great time to review your Giftster wish lists and remove items you no longer are interested in or have received.

Here are a few tips for making the most of Giftster.

Archive gifts with the I Got This button

Giftster has an archive feature called I Got This. When viewing your list, use the I Got This button to archive gifts you have received over the holidays and throughout the year.

Any item you archive with the I Got This button gets moved over to your I Got This list. It’s a way to see all of the items you’ve received.

Use the I got this button to archive items you’ve received.

Rename your list and choose a new list image

Did you name your list for a specific holiday or event this year? Update your wish list name so it’s clear what it’s for. Or if you’re like me, name it sometime you won’t have to change so you can use it for birthdays, anniversaries and anytime gifting.

Now Giftster offers a collection of creative list images to personalize your wish lists even more. Spruce things up with a new image for a whole new year of gifting.

Remind your group members to update their wish lists

Whether it’s a birthday, anniversary, or just because, Giftster makes it so easy to surprise someone you love with a gift they really wanted or needed. But…it only works if they add gift ideas.

To help, Giftster has a handy little reminder feature which sends the list maker an email giving them the subtle nudge to add a few items to their list. The fun part is it’s completely anonymous if you want it to be. Or you can include a personal note too. Go to Shop For and at the bottom of someone’s list look for the little lightning bolt.

Prepare for life changing magic

Keeping your wish list tidy and up to date will set your friends and family up for gifting success year-round. This not only gives your family the confidence they need when they want to surprise you, but also offers the same benefits to you when you want to show them a little love too.

Remember, with Giftster, gifts come in all forms. They don’t even have to cost a dime. Sometimes the best gift we can ask for is some time with family. Put that on your list – or whatever you need the most this year.

And in the spirit of tidying up…maybe a vacuum that cleans for you too 😎

Happy gifting!

We’re all about celebrating family at Giftster. In honor of Father’s Day, here in the U.S., I asked the Giftster team to share their favorite memories of their dad. And for the dads on the team–their experiences in fatherhood.

Share a fond memory with your Dad.

When I was a young adult just my Dad and I went to a small airport (outside Nashville) to watch the planes take off and land. It was something he loved to do. I remember how he talked about the various airplanes and how the early evening was the best time to go and observe. I fondly look back on this day and it always brings a smile to my face.

What is the best advice your dad ever gave you?

I can remember as a young child and throughout my life, my father told me that there is value in forgiveness.

Share a fond memory with your Dad.

My dad was away for work quite a bit when I was a kid but when he was home, he was always there for the things I did. From dance recitals to sports events, he found a way to be there and to be a part of it (and even ended up becoming a referee for a while).

What is the best advice your dad ever gave you?

Among the things, my dad has taught me throughout my life…

Be proud of your achievements yet remain humble.

Be a part of something bigger than yourself that benefits others.

Love your family, and honor and remember the heritage that has been passed down to from past generations.

Share a fond memory with your Dad.

I remember a fishing trip we took together to a very small lake in northeastern Wisconsin. We caught fish after fish–mostly small sunfish and bluegill–from our small fishing raft. Then all of a sudden I realized I had a turtle on my hook! We went on to catch 4 painted turtles on accident and released them back. It was such a fun time! We went on a lot of fishing and camping trips as a family over the years.

What is the best advice your dad ever gave you?

“Work hard, play hard.”

My dad is the hardest worker I know. I credit much of my work-ethic to him. But–he always told me the reason we work hard is to play hard. I feel fortunate to have traveled all across the country as a child and have developed a passion for travel and culture.

What surprised you most about being a father?

How quickly I lost my hair! No, really, the intense love you feel towards your kids that makes it so easy to sacrifice yourself for their safety, learning, growing, faith, and recreation.

If you had to give yourself advice before becoming a father, what would you say?

Give them the best of you, and do what you can to help them discover all the talents that God has wired them with.

What’s your favorite activity to do with your kids?

Outdoors in nature. Whether swimming in the St. Croix River, snowmobiling, boating, or even ice fishing, we create family memories in the outdoors here in Minnesota.

Ian Fitzpatrick, Owner & CTO

What surprised you most about being a father?

What a cut-up my little dude would be. He is always working an angle on a joke, and a bit more honestly, driving a gag right into the ground. But the number of times he surprises us and gets us to bust out laughing goes a long long way to offset the…shall we say, more “challenging” aspects of having a kiddo.

If you had to give yourself advice before becoming a father, what would you say?

You know how you said you don’t have time to do things right now? You totally have so much time right now, you don’t know what “not having time” is, alright? Just wait until you are assisting a kid with distance learning, during a global pandemic, and the house is in utter shambles, THEN you will know what “not having time” is.

What’s your favorite activity to do with your kids?

My son is a bit of an indoor cat, so for us playing video games on the Nintendo Switch is our go-to activity. We also recently started doing a Saturday movie night where I pop some popcorn, and my son drags all his stuffed animals from his bed and assigns us each one for the duration of the movie. He looks forward to it all week, and it’s been a really special family activity.
